Yes or No?
Australia is not the only country in the world where voting is compulsory. I’m sure that there are significant numbers of adults in our community who couldn’t give a toss about The Voice and would much prefer not to have to record a vote on this particular issue. I’m guessing that the number of informal votes in our coming referendum will be those who mistakenly believe that a cross or a tick clearly indicates their view on the question.
One of the most interesting sociological facts about Australian voters is the almost overwhelming numbers of “no” voters who’ve indicated to our respective governments since 1901 that a change in the Constitution is not as good as a holiday. Not only have their numbers been substantial, they have more often than not indicated that the status quo is preferred…or perhaps they don’t understand the proposal.
If any bookies are taking bets on the result of the referendum, I’d expect very short odds on no”.
