Referendum Success?

When everyone in Australia over the age of 18 is entitled to vote for something it really is a big deal, but the biggest deal comes when we are asked if we would like to amend or add to the constitution.

Australians over the past 123 years have been given the option of changing our constitution several times. The result has nearly always been a resounding no.

For a two-horse race one would expect a 50/50 result, or at least something close, however Australians have an entrenched habit of negatively responding to referendums.

Unfortunately, most constitutional changes that are proposed are not simple and the word changes to our founding document are extremely modest compared to the real changes that have been proposed and put to the population.

I don’t think too many bookies will be offering the opportunity of putting money on your choice.
